PRIMARY COLOURS.
In painting,primary colours are defined as those that cannot be obtained by mixing other colours. So these are the colours: yellow, blue and red. These are the three main colours of Johannes Itten's colour wheel (also known as the twelve-part colour circle).
By mixing two primary colours, the colours of the second order are obtained.
Yellow + red = orange;
yellow + blue = green;
red + blue = purple.
In this way, we obtain the 6 basic colours of our colour wheel which, in combination with black and white, are the only colours available in nature. All other colours are nothing more than a more or less bright or more or less clear version of these colours. By mixing the colour of the second row with the adjacent primary colour, we obtain the colour of the third row. For example:
yellow + green = yellowish green;
yellow + orange = orange-yellow;
red + orange = orange-red;
red + purple = purple red;
blue + green = greenish blue;
blue + purple = purple-blue.
As a complementary colour to a given colour, we define the colour on its opposite side in the chromatic circle. The complementary colour for yellow is therefore purple and vice versa; the complementary colour of red is green and vice versa; and the complementary colour of blue is orange, and vice versa. They are always the most contrasting. Combinations of this kind are very clear and expressive, they are also called complementary.
